Amartya Sen is the Thomas W. Lamont University Professor and Professor of Economics and Philosophy at Harvard University. In 1998, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in economics for his contributions to social choice theory and welfare economics. In this lecture from 2010, at Duke University, Prof. Sen critically assesses the contemporary reception of Adam Smith as a laissez-faire, free-market fundamentalist. Not only does Prof. Sen argue that such a view of Smith is seriously mistaken, he goes on to account for the ways in which Smith’s actual economic and moral views provide helpful tools for helping us to overcome the current global financial crisis.
